Why Share Your Cancer Story?
When faced with a cancer diagnosis, many people turn to the American Cancer Society as their primary source for information. They are also likely to do a broader online search. Gathering facts is empowering, but it can also be overwhelming.
You have been there. You are survivors, caretakers, chemotherapy patients. By telling your story, you can offer hope to someone who might be sitting in front of a computer still reeling from a diagnosis. What can you tell him/her that might make a difference in their outlook? What do you wish others had told you?
BENEFITS TO SHARING
There are so many benefits to sharing your story. Here are just a few:
- It’s good for you! Scientific American reports that expressive writing as exhibited in blogs “improves memory and sleep, boosts immune cell activity and reduces viral load in AIDS patients, and even speeds healing after surgery.”
- Offer hope to those who may be wondering if they have the strength to battle cancer
- Give advice and reassurance to family members of cancer patients
- Bring awareness and attention to the need for cancer research and cures.
- Help inspire people to make donations for cancer research.
- Chronicle your frustration and/or satisfaction with your health insurance and care during a critical time when politicians are contemplating change.
- Learn from the experiences of others.
- Build a cancer support network that is accessible from the comfort of your home.
- Keep your loved ones up-do-date about your condition without having to retell information over and over again.
- Publicize your fund-raising event.
If you are already sharing hope on your blog or on SharingHope.tv, we would love for you to comment about what motivates you to share.
